How To Protect Your Flooring During Renovations

How To Protect Your Flooring During Renovations

When you decide to do some home remodeling, you also need to think of ways to preserve what your home already has. Any type of flooring is vulnerable to damage whenever there is any work being done in the home—whether that is damage from boots, paint, or even falling materials.

Knowing how to cushion any blows and how to protect your flooring during renovations will eliminate the need for further expensive replacement.

Cover the Floors

The type of protection that your floors will need will depend on the work done in the room.

To Prevent Paint Splatter

If you are painting the walls, then rolling out plastic floor coverings along the base of the wall will prevent any accidental paint spills. You can go further by using some painter’s tape to seal the small gap between the plastic covering and the base of the wall. Failing to do so can result in paint slipping through and getting to the floors.

More Heavy-Duty Protection

Special heavy-duty flooring cardboard can prevent any dents, damages, and rips from happening to your flooring. You can safely place heavy equipment on these boards to save your flooring from the stress of hazardous equipment and materials. Secure the cardboard to the ground with tape to stop the board from shifting while it is in use.

Use Shoe Covers

There are many types of shoe covers, so be aware of which covers you are purchasing; every cover is not ideal for preserving the floors in every situation. Purchasing soft shoe covers can soften the footfalls of contractors walking through your home in heavy work boots.

A Cheap Solution That Can Prevent Expensive Repairs

Workers can easily slip the covers can on overshoes to prevent wear and tear from happing to your floors. For the options needed to protect flooring, the typical covers are cheap and come in packs containing large quantities.

Don’t Wait to Clean Up

Protect your flooring during renovations by cleaning up immediately. Spilled paint is easier to get off of surfaces while it is still wet, and by acting fast, you can avoid lasting and unsightly stains.

Clean as You Go

Never leave any single spot messy for too long and try to clean up an area before moving on. Leaving out equipment or materials for an extended period can damage the floors. Further, leaving out materials can also increase the tripping hazards and can cause you to fall over and spill paint and other debris.

Preempt the Hazards

Know the potential risks to the renovations you are doing. Base your protective measures on all the likely risks and have everything set up before any work is done. Failing to properly protect the floors can mean that you will just have to remodel them as well.
